Rebecca "Becca" Quickfin is a mermaid from Atlantica and is one of the main characters in the Waterfire Saga. She is the descendant of Pyrrha and is talented at casting waterfire.

Personality[]

Becca is the most practical of the mermaids, coming from a chaotic background, she would constantly plan things to make life neat and orderly. She has a tendency to be organized and efficient, with a quick-thinking and responsible attitude.

She is strong and brave, as when she defended herself against three rusalka. It can also be noted that Becca is sure of herself and is quite intelligent.

Appearance[]

Becca has curly red hair, freckles and blue eyes and a pearly beige tail with patches of brown.

When she is first introduced in the book, she wears gold-rimmed glasses, a pearl necklace, hair combs and carries a traveling case.

In Dark Tide, she wears a jacket. Astrid, while practicing pipe magic, turns her face bright yellow, her tail silver and makes tentacles sprout from her head (all temporarily).

History[]

Becca was orphaned at a young age when her father died of mercury poisoning and her mother was killed by longline hooks.

Pre-series[]

She went to an orphanage and when she was older she became a worker at the songpearl shop Baudel's.

Deep Blue[]

Becca first appears near the end of Deep Blue, while being attacked by a group of three rusalka (the ghosts of terragogg women who have drowned themselves in rivers due to a broken heart) in the River Olt. Though the ghosts are mean and violent, Becca is seen by Serafina, Neela, and Ling to be fighting back hard against them. The other three step in to help her, and end up victims of the rusalka themselves. One of the ghosts pulls out Becca's hair combs and takes her pearl necklace off and attempts to "decorate herself" with them, though they fall to the river bed. The merls are saved from getting their wrasses kicked by Ava, who sends the ghosts off in search of their ex-lovers, having falsely stated that she'd seen him with his new lover and they'd been laughing together about the ghosts.

Becca introduces herself simply as "Becca, from Atlantica" and collects her belongings to put back into her traveling case, paying no mind to the "nasty cuts" Ling points out immediately afterward. Ling expresses her amazement that Becca had been fighting the ghosts off by herself, at which Becca smiles. Shrugging off Ling's concern, she claims that the cuts are only scratches, and that she's had worse. When Ava says that she would have fought the rusalka all day long, Becca replies with "If I had to. And they'd have come out the worse for it . . . eventually." Ava then tells Becca that she had felt that she was "the one with spirit sure and strong" from the second she'd met her.

As the girls swim to the Iele's cave, Becca shares that she used to work at Baudel's Songpearl Shop. Neela and Ava are especially intrigued by this, and Becca explains that several new pearls will be released (some of which were her ideas).

Becca meets Astrid, and the Iele at the same time the other girls do. She takes place in destroying Abbadon's image and also in the bloodbind. She is last seen swimming through Vraĵa's mirror into Rorrim's realm, the mirror world.

Rogue Wave[]

Becca is seen in one convoca in the book. She isn't mentioned after that in the second book.

Dark Tide[]

Becca, while travelling through Atlantica, meets up with Astrid accidently and, though reluctant at first, team up together to survive. She soon discovers Astrid's lack of magic and Astrid confesses that her parents might have been ashamed. Becca admits to Astrid that what she said about her parents and her life in Atlantica was a story; she is an orphan. Becca helps Astrid make magic by creating a whale bone pipe, though they later have to go their separate ways to find their talismans.

Becca soon arrives at the home of the vicious Williwaw, and attempts to stealthily retrieve Pyrrha's coin. Although she successfully collects her talisman, the Williwaw spots her and chases her into the open ocean. As Becca attempts to escape the Williwaw by swimming to the surface, the Williwaw casts a spell to brew a strong magical storm. Despite her fierce determination to escape, a wave catches Becca and slams her into boulders on a nearby island where she falls unconscious.

Becca then wakes on a terragogg ship where she meets her rescuers: the handsome new Praedatori leader Marco and his sister Elisabetta. The siblings informed Becca that Rate Mfeme and several deathriders would attempt to take back Pyrrha's coin, so they had to set sail for the Karg immediately. Whenever they took breaks, Becca and Marco would swim and stretch and Elisabetta would rest. As a result of their increased time together, Becca and Marco grew romantic feelings for each other. Despite Marco's hopeful and passionate words for her, Becca stated that "it's impossible" for them to be together and that she had leave (by this time Elisabetta had docked the ship near the Karg).

Becca soon meets up with Astrid and Serafina's brother, Desiderio, who all three later get caught by goblin troops and brought to the Black Fin Resistance's new base in the Kargjord, where they meet up with Serafina, Neela, and later, Ling.

Sea Spell[]

Becca is first seen in the book when she angers Neela by waking her up, when she goes to find a lava seam. While Ling tries to figure out who is the spy in the Karg, Becca becomes frustrated with goblins not finishing their work on time and becomes rather irritable which is very unlike her friendly, determined character. This leads Ling to think that Becca may be the spy, because the spy may be hurting inside as a result of his/her betrayal to the Karg. Ultimately, Serafina tries to speak to Becca and see what's wrong despite Becca's protests. As Sera begins to leave, Becca blurts out what she had been hiding in her heart: she and Marco are in love with each other. The first feeling that Serafina recognizes is relief - Becca is not the spy. She then explains to Becca that such a relationship is not easy but things can work out (<- someone please confirm this). Afterwards, Becca and Serafina join the goblins at the newly-found lava seam for some warmth, food, and rest among friends.

(SPOILERS AHEAD) When Sera is captured by Lucia's maligno of Mahdi, Sera's inner circle (Desiderio, Astrid, Becca, Ling, Neela, and Coco) plans to invade Cerulea but they realize that they need better transportation in order to successfully pull an element of surprise on Vallerio and his troops. Becca announces to the group that she believes she knows who can help: Marco. Becca, wearing a black cloak and hood, arrives uncertainly at the new Palazzo - she questioned if it was the right place. Her question is quickly answered as she is shoved inside, and is surrounded by mako sharks in a dark underwater room. As she swims to the main room, she breaches the surface and soldiers surround her with rifles in hand. When questioned of her identity and her reason for coming to the Palazzo, Becca responds, "Those are two questions actually. My name is Rebecca Quickfin and I-" a male voice called out, "Becca?" The voice she had longed to hear. She calls out for Marco, and he jumps into the water to kiss her, love filling her heart. When they broke their kiss, Becca saw that the soldiers put down their weapons and looked at the ceiling or checked their rifles. Although they were happy to see each other, Becca told Marco that she and the Karg were in trouble and would need transportation (specifically fifty supertrawlers).

As Becca, the inner circle, the Black Fin Resistance, and the goblins readied for battle in the ships, Becca searched for Marco to say goodbye as this may be the last time they see each other. When their conversations nears its end, Marco grabs Becca's wrist and asks her to come back so that they can have a "shot at the impossible".

Becca is involved in the Battle for Cerulea and when they go to fight Abbadon.

By the end of the book it is said that Becca is attending a college in Italy where she plans to major in political science, and that she and Marco are trying to work things out.

Trivia[]
